While one pack of hand sanitizers in question costs just $14.50 in retail, the couple had been selling them online for $64.50 per pack amid coronavirus outbreak.

“It’s a big opportunity with all these products. I’ve got to pay the bills. With a regular job, I won’t be making this money… I know it won’t last forever,” Ranga told Toronto Star as he attempted to justify his actions.

As the pair added, they traveled around the city with a truck and stopped at numerous Costco stores in order to get their hands on thousands of wipes.

While one branch threatened the couple to limit the number of supplies they could buy, Perez protested by claiming that wouldn’t be fair because others were doing the same.

“It’s just a business I’m doing right now,” Ranga told CTV.

“The government’s not helping us pay our bills. Kids can’t go to school; my kids go to private school. I pay $20,000 a year on private school and they’re not returning it.”

Furthermore, the 38-year-old slammed the shipping companies for doing the same and insisted that “Amazon’s making money on it too.”

Following the coronavirus outbreak, plenty of people have been resorting to profiteering schemes as they started stocking up on essentials in an attempt to resell them and make money in the process.

As Amazon explained in a statement, however, they will not tolerate price gouging and will take down accounts of those who “are attempting to artificially raise prices on basic need products during a global health crisis.”

“In line with our long-standing policy, [we] have recently blocked or removed tens of thousands of offers. We continue to actively monitor our store and remove offers that violate our policies,” their statement read.
