A couple in Taiwan married four times and divorced three times to exploit a loophole in their country’s labor laws.
According to the South China Morning Post, the couple found a way to benefit from their marriage by playing the system and claim free vacation days.
Under Taiwan’s labor laws, an eight-day leave is provided for newlyweds. But because the couple tied the knot four times, they managed to claim 32 days’ worth of vacation days.
According to reports, the bank refused to approve the husband’s leave claims. He then took the case to the Taipei city labor department, which fined the bank NT$20,000 ($710) for violating leave regulations.
The fine was later revoked when the head of the Taipei city labor department said that authorities would reevaluate the regulation to prevent such loopholes from being exploited.
The couple first tied the knot on April 6, 2020, and divorced ten days later. They got married again on April 17 and filed for another divorce on April 28.
They wed for the third time on April 29 and divorced for the third time on May 11. Then they finally got married for the fourth time on May 12.
Taipei Deputy Mayor Huang Shanshan took to Facebook and said that the Taiwanese labor bureau needs to reevaluate the policy to avoid it being exploited again.
“In this case, it is clear that the employee used the marriage leave and exploited a loophole to benefit from it.
The laws exist for the benefit of the people, and people should not act in bad faith,” Huang added.
