An accused racist couple that had been harassing their black neighbor for several years has been arrested and charged following the mother’s pleas for help.
According to 39-year-old mother and nurse Jennifer McLeggan, her neighbors have been harassing her ever since she had bought her home in the village of Valley Stream in Long Island, New York, back in 2017.
As the mother previously claimed, her neighbors would throw human feces and dead animals, such as squirrels, on her lawn. They would allegedly also flaunt their guns in front of her and threaten to ‘erase’ her.
Following years of alleged harassment, the couple responsible for Jennifer’s worries have been arrested, named, and charged.
According to DailyMail.com, a Nassau County District Attorney’s Office spokesperson confirmed that 57-year-old John McEneaney has been charged with criminal mischief and harassment.
Meanwhile, his girlfriend, 53-year-old Mindy Canarick, has been charged with criminal tampering.
The concerned mother’s story went viral months ago after she had hung a heartbreaking note detailing the harassment on her front door.
“My neighbors have been racially harassing me since I purchased my home. I took video footage to court and won a $5,000 judgment from my videos,” the message wrote.
“They have thrown human feces on my property and it was recorded. They are now planting dead squirrels on my property and have told me to go back to where I came from.
“They have their friends come spit on my property and it was recorded. A blow torch was taken to my home at 3 am. They have said that I can be ‘erased.’”
Following the mom’s plea, she raised over $50,000 on GoFundMe with the intention of installing a proper security system in her home. Eventually, the Nassau County 5th Precinct also decided to act and station a police officer outside the family’s home.
As Heather Palmore, Jennifer’s lawyer, insisted, the aggression “went on too long.”
“For years she felt unsafe coming to a place she was supposed to feel safe at, coming home,” she told the New York Daily News.
“But it’s more representative of the overall state of the poor relationship between the police and the Black community here on Long Island.”
While Palmore praised the Nassau County District Attorney for “handling this matter” in a professional manner, the attorney took an aim at the police for not acting sooner.
“The police have been to Jennifer’s house I can’t tell you how many times over the last three years and nothing was done by the police county department,” Palmer said.
