A couple was left heartbroken after the sperm donor they chose changed his mind and destroyed the embryos.
Aussies Jess and Leroy Natoli have long been thrilled to start their own family and they couldn’t be any happier when Jess’s eggs were fertilized by an unnamed sperm donor.
Their joy, however, didn’t last long, whereas the man decided to make a U-turn and demand that the embryos he had helped father are destroyed.
“Those embryos are half genetically ours. The three potential chances of expanding our family will be terminated based on the decision of this human. To knowingly and consciously make this decision is selfish,” Jess expressed in an interview with Daily Mail Australia.
According to the publication, the decision was only possible due to the lax laws of the state of Victoria where a sperm donor has the option to withdraw consent and terminate embryos as long as the transfer hasn’t been completed yet.
As the heartbroken couple added, they were left upset by the donor’s decision and the fact that the state’s laws permit a “shameful, appalling” thing such as this.
According to Jess and Leroy, the staff at the IVF clinic they had chosen told them that several other couples had to go through a similar ordeal after sperm donors decided to backtrack.
“Time can’t be measured, some days its 24/7 worrying, crying because you’re so emotional from all the hormones. We started more than 12 months ago and now we’re back to stage one,” Jess added.
“The whole year and the hard work and emotion that went into this has been voided … We have no say in this choice whatsoever.”
