A newlywed couple was confronted by a dire diagnosis just weeks after receiving the good news that they fell pregnant with their first child.
34-year-old Ellie and 35-year-old Jess Holly Bates tied the knot back in March. Months after kicking off their married life, Ellie spotted a suspicious lump in her right breast.
By the next day, Ellie had already dismissed her concerns since the lump didn’t cause any pain. Her day was also brightened after the couple discovered that Jess was pregnant with their first baby.
Unfortunately, their bliss was short-lived, whereas the couple discovered that Ellie’s lump was actually an aggressive form of breast cancer just two weeks later.
“My mum had breast cancer young, so I always knew there was a chance I would get it, but I never thought it would be this young, just as my life felt like it was starting,” Ellie admitted in an interview with Daily Mail Australia.
After the 34-year-old got diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, Jess couldn’t believe that this was happening to them so soon after their wedding and amid their pregnancy.
“Ellie is the most amazing person you’ll ever meet. You just quietly fall in love with her. She’s just so fundamentally wonderful. It didn’t feel fair,” Jess expressed.
Following the dire diagnosis, Ellie’s doctors suggested she should undergo a double mastectomy and grueling chemotherapy to increase her chances of survival.
Months after the shocking news, Ellie is still fighting cancer and is now halfway through her treatment.
“Some days I feel like my soul has left my body, just to cope with the pain and discomfort. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone,” she added.
While her doctors said the odds were in her favor considering her condition, Ellie could only be given a prognosis up until the age of 44 – something that she finds hard to accept because she is still so young.
“We’re starting a family and I want to live to be much older than that. The oncologists say my odds are good, but we can’t be too careful,” she admitted.
Sending words of support to the family. We wish Ellie a full and speedy recovery!
