We’ve seen some truly incredible homes on Small Joys, but we’ve never covered a home quite like this before.
Cathy and Randy, a married couple, decided to purchase a unique plot of land in Arizona. The land was so vertical, with hills and mountains that there was no suitable place to build a home. The couple were determined to make it work so they didn’t give up on the land.
Then a couple of weeks later, when Cathy was exploring the property and admiring the endless beauty, she heard a loud explosion not too far away. Instinctively, she ran over towards the explosion to make sure everyone was okay and safe. What she found absolutely shocked her.

Her neighbor had caused the explosion, which was controlled so he could make his home in the side of the mountain. That’s right, their neighbor, a mining engineer, was blowing out the inside of a rock so he could make his very own cave home. Cathy quickly fell in love with the idea. She watched as their neighbor created an incredible house right out of a cave and decided that was what she wanted to do with her property.
After she convinced her husband, the couple decided to create their very own cave house and enlisted the work of their neighbor to create it. The couple have turned the cave into something very comfortable and gorgeous looking. Cathy says that the cave feels so much like a home, that she wonders if it may because our ancestors once lived in caves. Either way, the home this couple has created is absolutely beautiful.
The home has incredibly high ceilings, reaching as high as 15 feet! This is no ordinary cramped cave! In fact the cave is roughly 2,568 square feet and features three bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, a living room, and a loft bed. Not only is the interior of the home absolutely gorgeous, but their home is also connected to a deck that overlooks the surrounding mountain range. Imagine being able to look at that every morning you wake up!
Also their cave home has an incredible supply of water. There’s actually a spring inside of their home that produces 20 gallons of water a day. The water has been cleaned through 80 feet of granite so it’s very clean and absolutely delicious. Right from inside of their home!

I’ve never lived in a house this wonderful, anywhere. It will be very hard to leave this house
This is certainly a very unique home and totally not what I expected from a home based in a cave. It certainly has a very unique charm and I imagine that stunning view helps a lot as well!
