As the Omaha World-Herald revealed back in 2018, the couple met in Nebraska and fell for each other just as Dorothy and her family were about to leave for Colorado.

Knowing that there was only one way for them to stay together, Ralph asked Dorothy to marry him, much to the surprise of their families.

After appearing at the Burt County Courthouse to get married on September 16, 1935, the couple was turned away by a judge who told them they were still too young.

“Everybody said it would never last. You don’t ever think you’d make it. We did. That’s the main thing,” Ralph said in an interview with WOWT-TV.

As the station reported, the pair came back on the following day, September 17, and managed to convince another judge to marry them.

85 years later, the couple continues to thrive and share their story with the world.

As Ralph and Dorothy revealed, they credit their long life and successful marriage to healthy habits and mutual understanding.

Besides never smoking or drinking alcohol, the couple learned to accept and share each other’s passions and hobbies including clay shooting and ballroom dancing.

“Love for one thing, and we enjoy the same thing. And if we didn’t, we accepted it,” the 102-year-old told WOWT-TV. “Dorothy loves ballroom dancing, and I loved shooting clay targets. I joined her with ballroom dancing, and she joined me with trap shooting.”

While Ralph was willing to indulge in ballroom dancing to support his wife’s hobby, Dorothy not only picked up clay shooting but also became a national champion back in 1952.

The couple also shared their advice for people who find themselves in conflict with their other half as they suggested it’s best to resolve problems right away. “If we ever had a problem, I agreed to it. That’s the best way to get out of them,” Mr. Kohler said.
