Thirty-five years is a long time to be married and sometimes you need to think outside the box so that things don’t get dull.

But Paul Seymour, a romantic, has made sure to always spice things up in his marriage with some quirky yet fun ways to celebrate. And the best thing is, his wife is always game.

For starters, the 60-year-old Paul took his wife Joanne to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary on July 28, 2019 in a betting shop.

It was still a special night with a bottle of champagne on hand and $240 in betting money.

Paul said that since they liked to gamble anyway, he thought it would be a perfect way to celebrate their special day.

But this isn’t the first time that the couple has gone beyond the box when thinking of ways to celebrate big occasions. In 2014, the couple, who are big Dr. Who fans, renewed their vows at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, Gravesend, but surprised their 80 guests by having a Dalek with a bow tie as the best man (the “Dalek” glided down the aisle to deliver Joanne’s wedding ring).

The unique theme saw them featured in the news and Paul said he wanted another unique way to celebrate their next big milestone.

He said: “We always try to be a little bit different. We like to gamble and we visit the Coral regularly so I thought why not.

“We try to stick to themes and I couldn’t think of anything else for our Coral anniversary.

“We spent about three hours there. We took a bottle of champagne and raised a glass outside, we weren’t allowed to drink inside.

“We managed to have a few small wins and actually come out $240 up.

“All in all it was a great day and a fitting way for us to celebrate.”

Joanne says Paul is a romantic who can really surprise you with the unexpected.

When she found out what Paul’s big plan was, she “couldn’t stop laughing.”

“It was surprising and unique and very typical of my husband, who is prone to doing the unexpected.

“He did give me some money to put a bet on and we did win, but it didn’t last long as we went out for an expensive meal the same evening.

“He is really romantic – unlike me and I love him to bits. I wouldn’t swap his eccentricity. He keeps me happy and we do laugh a lot.”

The couple, who have no children, married in 1984 after meeting on a blind date a year earlier that was set up by friends.

Paul says that the 2014 “stunt” with the Dalek inspired him to think of other ways to commemorate important events in their lives.

“My dad taught me how to gamble and I and Joanne love a night out at the dogs”, said Paul.

“I just went into the shop to ask the branch manager and they were great about it.

“We doubled our money, which was nice.

“A few people thought we had won big because we had champagne. People seemed to take it light-heartedly.”

But the betting shop in Northumberland Heath wasn’t just a random idea because Paul’s mom, Brenda, used to work as a cleaner at that shop and his dad, David, also used to visit there regularly.

Paul said: “It was a chance to raise a toast to my parents.”
