Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York, announced that the number of daily coronavirus deaths in the city has seen a drop of less than 500 first time since 2nd April.
In his statement, he also urged the federal government to offer frontline workers a 50% bonus for helping the city during this critical time.
On Sunday, New York recorded 478 deaths due to COVID-19, which brings the total death toll to 14,347.
Cuomo, in his tweet, said that New York City has now moved past its peak and gradually coming to the other side.
However, the virus continues to hold a substantial threat, so it will not be taking down the lockdown. Positive coronavirus cases in hospitals have also witnessed a decline.
The governor said that although the death rate is staggeringly high, the data is going in the right direction.
He further added that with combined efforts, the city is going to get through this difficult time.
Cuomo admitted that New York has a lot more to do before it could think about re-opening, but it will certainly re-emerge soon.
The governor was also seen urging President Donald Trump to increase the capacity of the state to perform mass testing and show generosity to the frontline workers.
He suggested hazard pay to the frontline workers because they deserve that. The governor urged that they should get a 50% bonus immediately.
Cuomo also highlighted that it had been exactly 92 days since the country saw its first COVID-19 case.
On Monday, New York introduced an antibody testing study, which includes selecting 3000 people randomly at grocery stores and performing finger-prick blood tests.
The objective of this approach is to figure out what percentage of New York’s population has recovered from the novel virus and are capable of going back to work.
This is a state-developed test, and its accuracy is yet to be determined. While in the core specificity, the test can be 99% accurate, the sensitivity of these tests is challenging to determine.
As of now, New York has extended its lockdown till May 15, 2020.
