Back in 2006, Cariol Horne, a Buffalo cop of 19 years, got fired after pulling a fellow officer’s arm to stop him from choking a black suspect.

While the incident wasn’t recorded, Horne’s colleague insisted that the female cop jumped him while he was fighting for control with the suspect.

Following two years after the incident took place and just one year before she could retire, Horne was fired for going against a fellow cop.

For years after her dismissal, Horne has been fighting against police brutality and even attempted to pass legislation that would protect officers who intervene to stop excessive use of force while on the job.

Following one decade after Horne was fired, Gregory Kwiatkowski, the officer she previously opposed, had been sentenced to jail time after excessive use of force in an unrelated case.

Now, in the wake of protests against police brutality, Buffalo Common Council has filed a resolution that should see Horne’s case reviewed.

“There is a responsibility to propose special protections for individual police officers who intervene to protect citizens from excessive use of force situations involving their other officers,” the council wrote in the resolution.

Speaking of her case in a recent interview with CNN, Horne said:

“I don’t want any officer to go through what I have gone through. I had five children and I lost everything but [the suspect] did not lose his life.

“So, if I have nothing else to live for in life, at least I can know that I did the right thing and that [he] still breathes.”
