According to the doctors, an experimental treatment utilizing blood plasma works and has helped save a coronavirus affected patient who was about to die.
The male patient being treated in Worcester’s UMass Memorial Medical Center in Massachusetts had been on the ventilator and his health was deteriorating.
The hospital had received its 1st batch of the blood plasma from recovered coronavirus patient and used it as the last option. However, to their surprise, the condition of the patient started improving within hours.
According to the health experts, plasma is a potential treatment but due to a few donations, the doctors are forced to decide which patients would receive it and which would not.
A hematologist at the hospital, Dr. Jonathan Gerber, said that he was not sure that the patient would live for long. He noted that the patient was approaching near the ventilator’s maximum settings to keep him alive.
However, the vital signs of the patient improved dramatically within a few hours of the treatment. Dr. Jonathan noted that he was not only ecstatic but also pleasantly surprised.
He added that the team had hoped for the best and that was the best they could have hoped for.
The convalescent plasma therapy is an experimental treatment where the plasma from a recovered COVID-19 patient is used on the affected patient in critical condition.
By doing so, it is hoped that the immunity and antibodies in the blood of the healthy person, when transferred to the sick person, would develop antibodies in the infected person required to beat the coronavirus.
This was first used in 1918’s Spanish Flu pandemic.
People can donate their plasma more than one time but they have to wait for a few weeks after donating. The FDA has approved the use of this therapy for treatment last month.
However, it should be given to patients who are experiencing issues like multiple organ failure or respiratory failure.
