Social media trolls were so quick to make memes after Dustin Poirier defeated Conor McGregor with a knockout in the second round.
“I just wasn’t as comfortable as I needed to be. It’s the inactivity,” McGregor said in an interview after the fight.
Despite the knock-out defeat at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi, the 32-year-old vowed to continue fighting.
“I have to dust it off and come back and that’s it. And what’s what I will do,” McGregor said, adding that he was left “gutted” by the loss.
“I put in a lot of work, I’m proud of my work, I would have liked to represent my team a bit better.”
After the match, Poirier said he felt like he was “boxing pretty well” against the Irishman.
“I’m here to win,” he added.
McGregor was knocked out two minutes and 32 seconds into the 2nd round after receiving punches from his opponent.
The photo of him curled up against the cage has quickly become a meme.
“How will Conor McGregor ever come back from this man? Money can’t delete these memes,” Twitter user hassanKara wrote.
McGregor paid tribute to Poirier and said he fought ‘a hell of a fight.’
“’It’s heartbreaking, it’s hard to take, highest highs and the lowest lows. My leg is completely dead – even though I felt like I was checking them I was badly compromised. It is like an American football in my suit at the minute,” he said.
“Dustin had a hell of a fight. I felt alright in the second round, felt better than him in the clinch but too little too late – my leg was compromised and I didn’t adjust.
“Fair play to Dustin, I am happy for him. I am happy to compete in these challenging times. I don’t know where I am at the minute. He fought a hell of a fight but what can you do, I am happy for him.”
