A teen from Arkansas said he was rejected from Marine when he revealed that he has a tattoo of the confederate flag.
18-year old Anthony Bauswell has inked a rebel flag on his ribs with ‘Southern Pride’ written around the flag.
Anthony was in the enlisting process going on at the Marine Corps Recruiting Centre located on Conway. On Monday, when he went for his recruitment, the official declared him to be ineligible due to his tattoo.
Boswell, in an interview, said just after he confessed about having a Confederate Flag, the recruiter straightaway said DQ. Each military branch has its own set of rules, but all of them prohibit racist tattoos or tattoos related to extremist or gang.
The boy revealed that the reason he had Southern Pride written along with the flag was that he did not want it to appear as racist. Anthony further said that he was very disappointed that the government is not allowing him to serve the country because of a tattoo.
While tattoos have been restricted in the military for ages, recently, the marines have tried to relax their rules with this regard.
According to the 2010 policy, officers can only have four visible tattoos while wearing their physical training uniform, which is a T-shirt and shorts.
Moreover, enlisted marines are not allowed to have any tattoos on their fingers, hands, wrists, or inside the mouth. They are also not allowed to have any visible tattoos that are larger than their fist.
The marines have announced that they will be updating their tattoo policy this month, but there will be a continued prohibition on the sleeve tattoo.
Commandment General of Marines, Robert Neller, said that the upcoming guidelines would further clarify what sorts of inks are acceptable for individuals who want to get enlisted and advance the ranks.
They are planning to include pictures to explain what the department means when it highlights a quarter of the top body part. The updated policy is expected to release within the next 30 days.
