An employee of a phone company was suspended for three weeks after using work equipment to rescue a cat that got itself trapped at the top of a pole.
Maurice German, who works for Verizon, an American telecommunications company, was on duty in Port Richmond, Pennsylvania, when a local resident asked him for help.
Following the plea, the kind worker couldn’t say no and proceeded to use his work equipment to reach Momma the cat that got trapped on top of a telephone pole.
According to Amanda Fairchild Boyce, the neighbor of Momma’s owner, her neighbors tried to rescue the pet themselves but didn’t succeed.
As the gentleman he is, German then used a boom lift to reach the cat and get her to safety. While everything was resolved in a matter of minutes, the amazed onlookers couldn’t help but praise the man for his actions.
After returning to work, however, Maurice was confronted by his bosses who suspended him on the grounds that he shouldn’t use the company’s equipment in the area of rescue.
“We take no joy in this job action,” Rich Young, Verizon’s spokesperson, told CBS Philly.
“However, we’re committed and responsible for keeping our employees and customers safe while working in a particular area.
“Unfortunately, while this employee’s goal was admirable, he potentially put his life and those around him in jeopardy.
“While our actions may not be popular, it’s in the best interest of our employees and the communities we serve.”
Angered by the company’s decision to suspend their worker for helping those in need, the local community has rallied and started two GoFundMe pages to raise the money that Maurice would have earned in the three weeks he was suspended for.
In only two days, the community already managed to raise whooping $10,000.
“Last weekend a Verizon employee came to the rescue of a cat (Princess ‘Momma’) outside of my home stuck on top of the telephone pole for 12 hrs. After numerous attempts to find support, no one could help. That’s until Maurice German and his team showed up!” Amanda Fairchild Boyce, the leader of one of the campaigns, said.
“This generous man is now being punished! Maurice is being suspended from his job for saving an animal. Let’s support Maurice for his good deed while his employer punishes him!”
