A 29-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after she shoved an innocent female commuter into the side of a moving subway train in NYC.
NYPD officers charged Anthonia Egegbara after surveillance footage showed her standing up and shoving a commuter into the side of an oncoming train at the Times Square subway.
The 42-year-old victim was taken to a hospital with facial injuries after the unprovoked attack.
The attack occurred at the Times Square station, where thousands of people commute daily to see the commercial intersection in Manhattan. The area sees an estimated 50 million tourists annually.
MTA acting Chief Communications Officer Tim Minton said of the incident: “This unprovoked attack was senseless and absurd.
“The city needs to provide additional mental health services to assist those who may endanger themselves and others. The NYPD’s rapid identification and arrest in this case makes riders safer.”
One commuter who witnessed the incident said the crime at the station did not shock him anymore.
“This is like what it used to be like in the 80s,” the witness told ABC 7.
Another rider told CBS 2: “People are wicked to be able to push someone on a moving train, and for what? I don’t know, but it’s horrible.”
Witnesses said that Egegbara timed her attack, adding the incident serves as a reminder to be aware of your surroundings.
“We’re all usually in our phones and stuff, or listening to music. So we’re not always 100% aware,” Bryana Yard from Brooklyn said.
“Definitely a good reminder to keep your eyes peeled and be on your toes in New York,” Tyler Sparling from West Village added.
