Martin Pistorius was a health and happy boy, who grew up in South Africa.
Everything was perfect until he was 12.
When he turned 12, he had no idea that his life was going to be turned upside down within few weeks.
He became sick with a mysterious disease that even doctors could not diagnose. Their best guess was cryptococcal meningitis, which is an infection of the spinal cord and brain.
Despite every treatment that doctors tried, Pistorius’ state got worse. Slowly, he lost control of his body, and eventually, he was in a vegetative state.
There was nothing the hospital could provide, so the doctors told his parents to just take him home and make him feel comfortable.
Initially, doctors thought that this little 12-year-old boy’s state would continue to get worse.

For the next 12 long years, Pistorius was in a coma, and no one could figure out why he became so sick in the first place, or how he maintained this state. Then, another mystery was added when Pistorious miraculously woke up one day.
But what he had to say right after he regained body functions was the most shocking part of all.
It turned out that he already had regained consciousness when he was about 14 or 15. Do his dismay, though, no one knew about it because he still couldn’t move or talk.
He was literally trapped inside his own body.
One of the most heartbreaking moment that he remembers, which he wrote about in his memoir called Ghost Boy, is when he heard his own mother said to him: “I hope you die.”
As you can imagine, Pistorius was devastated. “The rest of the world felt so far away when she said those words,” said Pistorius in an interview with the NPR.

He then added, “Everyone was so used to me not being there that they didn’t notice when I began to be present again. As time passed, I gradually learned to understand my mother’s desperation. Every time she looked at me, she could see only a cruel parody of the once-healthy child she had loved so much.”
It’s amazing how Pistorius maintains positive outlook on life, despite everything he went through.
Now, although he needs his speech computer to communicate with others, Pistorius is a 39-years-old who is happily married.
