The 21-year-old Boulder gunman made his first court appearance since killing ten people in a mass shooting at a Colorado supermarket.
Ahmad Alissa is being held at Boulder County Jail on one count of attempted murder and ten counts of murder.
On Thursday, his lawyers asked for three months to check and determine his mental health before he can stand trial.
Alissa wore a blue prison outfit, a white mask, and orange slippers. He was in a wheelchair when he appeared in court on Thursday.
His attorney, Kathryn Herold, said: “We cannot do anything until we’re able to fully assess Mr. Alissa’s mental illness and we cannot do that until we have the discovery from the government.”
Judge Thomas Mulvahill did not say how long the matter would be delayed. However, he gave the defense two weeks to respond to a motion.
Ten people tragically died when Alissa opened fire at a King Scoopers grocery store at 3600 Table Mesa Drive.
His family described him as a ‘loser’ who ‘never had a girlfriend.’
He took to social media to complain about former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and ranted about Islamophobes hacking his phone.
Alissa’s brother-in-law told The Sun that the gunman worked in their family’s restaurant The Sultan Grill and that he lived in their basement.
They live in Arvada, Colorado, around 30 miles from Boulder.
It is not clear why the 21-year-old traveled to King Scoopers or how long he had been planning the mass shooting.
On Tuesday, President Joe Biden called for an all-out ban on assault rifles in the wake of the devastating incident. He also urged Congress to pass a bill to tighten the laws on background checks for those people who want to buy guns.
