It’s normal to express emotions when our favorite show is on TV. Whether it’s men screaming when their basketball team manages to make a shot or girls gushing as the actor they’re crushing on comes on screen, we express how happy we are in different ways. As it turns out, pets can do the same.
Meet Brandy, a 36-year-old cockatoo (they can actually live up to 70 to 80 years old with the proper care) who was sent to a rescue center when she was 4 years old. At the time, the presence of other birds disturbed her and it got to the point that she started to pick at her own feathers, a clear sign of distress among birds like her.
Fortunately, Brandy finally found a forever home soon after and now lives with her owner, a briard dog named Chou Chou, and a small tortoise.
One day, her owner decided to have Brandy watch a PBS show called “Nova” which featured birds. She was curious about how Brandy would react. Would she remember that time when she was 4 years old and was uncomfortable with other birds? Would she just ignore the show? Or will she prove that she’s moved on?
As it turns out, time does heal some wounds and Brandy seemed engrossed with what was on TV. Whenever there was a close-up shot of a bird, she’d keep barking, perhaps as a way of expressing her interest or enjoyment of the show. It’s clear she wasn’t disturbed at all as she wasn’t flapping her wings or trying to escape the room.
The segment about wolves did scare Brandy a little though and she dealt with it by hiding under the catch plate beneath her stand and only popped her head out when the segment moved back to talking about birds.
That was certainly an adorable display by Brandy and answered her owner’s question on what her cockatoo thinks of other birds. This definitely shows that it’s not just dogs and cats that have unique personalities and quirks and that’s why we should always be sensitive about the behavior of our pets.
And in case you didn’t notice already, it seems Brandy has spent too much time around Chou Chou because she’s barking like a dog and not squawking like a bird!
