A Tamagotchi is a digital pet released by Bandai in Japan back in 1996. Its popularity spread like wildfire to all corners of the world. More than 82 million models were purchased when it first launched.

JB Hi-Fi is now banking on the nostalgia of millennials and Gen Ys to drive sales – the latest model costs $34.

The classic model does not have any whistles or bells that other models featured but it gives customers the feeling of childhood. Like during those days, you will have to water, feed and discipline your Tamagotchi pet to keep it alive.

The toys come in 8 different style and some of them are classic ones that 90s kids know and love.

Many people shared their memories when they had a Tamagotchi as a child.

One woman said: “The only thing I cared about in year 5 was the Tamagotchi that lived on the end of a lanyard around my neck. That was my child.”

Another wrote: “Remember how devastated I was when my I was eating soup with my Tamagotchi around my neck on a lanyard and it took a dive?”

Others shared that their parents kept their Tamagotchi alive during the day as they couldn’t take their digital pets to school.

“Sometimes I just gave up and let it die and restarted it, and that’s why I would be a terrible mother,” someone commented.

“At $34 each I think I’ll stick to my childhood memories for that price, what a rip off!” another wrote.
