Portugal has granted full citizenship rights to all migrants, including asylum seekers, amid the country’s battle against COVID-19.
As the number of infected people in Portugal continues to rise, the authorities have decided to “unequivocally guarantee the rights of all the foreign citizens” by providing them with temporary citizenship rights.
Under the new regulations, migrants in the country will have full access to the healthcare system until the end of June.
According to a CNN report, the Portuguese Council of Ministers justified the decision by saying it was made to “reduce the risks for public health.”
Meanwhile, the country’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, praised people “who have been exemplary in imposing a self-quarantine” and called the pandemic “a true war.”
In a recent turn of events, Russia has also taken drastic measures to stop the virus from spreading by imposing a lockdown on its capital, Moscow.
Following the lockdown announcement by mayor Sergei Sobyanin, the streets of Moscow have been empty, whereas the authorities explained that people would still be allowed to go out to buy food and medical supplies.
In addition, residents are allowed to go to work and walk their dogs outside provided they do so in a 330-ft radius from where they live.
As the mayor explained, ‘drastic’ measures were taken because people ignored social distancing advice previously provided by the authorities.
According to Sobyanin, people had been avoiding self-isolation and continued to gather in public places and go on non-essential travels. “It is obvious that not everyone heard us,” the mayor said as he announced stricter quarantine measures.
To make sure people stay at their homes, the government plans on using their extensive monitoring system consisting of thousands of facial recognition cameras scattered across the capital.
