Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has called for an investigation into Trump’s alleged plan to replace his AG with one that would help him fight the election results.

According to a Friday New York Times report, insiders told the publication that the former president plotted to fire Attorney General Jeff Rosen and replace him with his loyalist, Justice Department’s Jeffrey Clark, who would then help him overturn his election loss in Georgia.

While Rosen repeatedly rejected Trump’s calls for the election results in Georgia to be overturned, Clark was reportedly leaning towards the former president’s side and agreed to the plan to challenge the election outcome in the swing state.

As the New York Times reported, however, insiders confirmed that the scheme backfired after a series of DoJ officials threatened to resign should the then-acting AG be replaced before Biden’s inauguration.

“Unconscionable a Trump Justice Department leader would conspire to subvert the people’s will,” the Democrat tweeted.

While overturning Georgia’s election results and securing 16 Electoral College votes still wouldn’t be enough to make Trump the winner of the 2020 presidential election, the act could result in similar attempts to overturn results in other swing states.

Clark was nominated for the position of Assistant Attorney General of the Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) by Trump back in 2018. At Trump’s direction, he later also assumed the role of Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division.

On January 14, he resigned from the Department of Justice. Speaking of the allegations, Clark insisted that all of his official communications were lawful in a statement to The Times.

“Senior Justice Department lawyers, not uncommonly, provide legal advice to the White House as part of our duties. All my official communications were consistent with law,” he claimed.
