Two Christian missionaries from Chicago have been accused of pretending to be Jews in order to gain access to synagogues and attempt to convert members of Jewish communities into Christianity.
29-year-old Rivkah Weber and 37-year-old David Costello were exposed as Christian missionaries months after moving to a Jewish neighborhood and attending a synagogue.
The couple’s secret operation with one goal in mind – to convert as many Jews into Christians as possible – was busted after a man recognized David and accused him of pulling off the same trick in New York.
Following the exposure of their real intent, Rabbi Levi Notik of the Chicago FREE center confronted the pair and called them out for attempting to convert members of the synagogue into Christianity.
“They have beliefs of Kefira and Christianity,” the rabbi said in an interview with COL LIVE. “He doesn’t deny any of it, on the contrary, he insists that he is correct in his way, and has no regrets.”
Following the public outrage over the pair’s actions, the local Jewish community confirmed the allegations and wrote: “To answer the rumors, it is true that a couple moved into our community in the purpose of proselytizing … They are confirmed missionaries.”
After the incident went viral, 37-year-old David, who is a father-of-two, also spoke out and confirmed that he and Rivkah were on a mission to get the Jews to recognize Jesus “as a Jewish Messiah.”
“We want Jewish people to recognize Yeshua as Moshiach and as a Jewish Messiah,” Costello told JTA.
“We actually keep the Torah and the mitzvahs. We actually have an Orthodox life in our house and every day of our life, and they are saying that it’s simply to deceive and to bring Jewish people to believe in Jesus.”
