Chris Watts, the father-of-two who took the lives of his pregnant wife and their daughters, has spent his 36th birthday in prison.
But he did not celebrate his big day with anyone as not even his fellow prisoners at maximum-security Wisconsin prison Dodge Correction Institution have any time for him, PEOPLE reported.
Watts is currently serving a life sentence for the murders of his wife Shannan, and their children Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3.
PEOPLE cited a source ‘who regularly speaks’ to Watts.
“No one wants anything to do with him,” they said. “He’s on the lowest social tier of the entire prison. He’s in protective custody because if he’s around other inmates, he’d be in real danger. He’s an outcast, even among criminals.”
Watts celebrated his 36th birthday alone, with guards and inmates snubbing him.
“He’s probably the most hated man in that prison, because he killed children,” the source continued.
“There’s a definite pecking order in jail, and someone who hurts or kills kids is at the very bottom.”
The 36-year-old has already been transferred during his sentence because of security fears at his previous location.
He now spends most of his time replying to his pen pals from the outside.
“He’ll write [to] his penpals this season, and they’re sending him notes, as well,” the source continued. “It’s literally all he can do at this point.”
According to reports, Watts has planned to appeal his sentence but he has not filed any paperwork yet.
“He’s a young guy, only 36, so he could live like this for the next 50 years. It’s probably a fate worse than death.”
The murders became global knowledge after the Netflix documentary American Murder: The Family Next Door was released in September 2020.
