Former Trump ally Chris Christie suggested that the President should be impeached for inciting insurrection.
As the former governor of New Jersey expressed during an interview with George Stephanopolous of ABC, he believes that Trump should be impeached for inciting the riot that turned deadly and shook the foundations of American democracy.
“Oh sure, yeah,” Mr. Christie replied when the This Week host asked him whether he believes that the President’s offense was an impeachable one.
After being asked if he would also vote to impeach Trump if he could, the former governor said:
“If I think it’s an impeachable offense that’s exactly what I would do, George. But I’m not in there. But you want my opinion, that’s my opinion. If inciting to insurrection isn’t [an impeachable offense], I don’t know what is.”
He added: “I mean, what we had was an incitement to riot at the United States Capitol, we had people killed, and to me there’s not a whole lot of question here.”
Among other Republicans who distanced themselves from Trump following his controversial battle against the election results were also Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey and Illinois Representative Adam Kinzinger.
Calling for Trump “to resign and go away as soon as possible,” Toomey told NBC’s Chuck Todd that the President’s resignation would be the “best way for our country.”
Taking aim at Trump was also Kinzinger who told ABC that he believes “the best thing for the country to heal would be for him to resign.”
