Children Who Spend Too Much Time On Screens Struggle To Communicate And Express Emotions

Children who spend too much time on screen find it difficult to communicate and express their feelings, according to experts.

Kids also tend to bite other children and staff at nurseries when parents don’t have enough time to read or talk to them.

The warning came after nursery owners, workers and managers were questioned, and results found that they have seen a rise in the number of kids biting in the past 5 years.

62 percent of the people questioned said they usually have to deal with kids biting at their facilities.

The editor of the daynurseries.co.uk website, Sue Learner, carried out the survey and said the results were ‘extremely worrying.’

She also said that children tend to bite when they don’t have the right words to express their feelings.

“Our findings resonate with other studies which have found an increase in the number of pre-school children with poor language skills,” she said.

“Too much screen time and the pressures on working parents – which means they are not spending time talking to their children – have been blamed for the rise in children’s problems communicating.”

Life can be so busy but it is important for parents to have enough time to talk to their kids and read books to them so they can develop language skills.

“Otherwise it is nurseries that have to pick up the slack,” Miss Learner added.

She highlighted a recent study by the Booktrust charity which found that many parents use technology such as Amazon’s Alexa, video messaging and apps to give their kids a night-time story.

“Reading books to your children and spending time talking to them builds their confidence and curiosity as well as their language and self-esteem,” she argued.

“It is no wonder there is a rise in children biting at nursery due to them getting cross and frustrated over an inability to communicate as well as it being a cry for attention.”
