Authorities found more than 100 missing children in one day during a sex trafficking operation in Michigan.
They found 123 children in the Wayne County Area, including Detroit as part of a wide-scale law enforcement operation.
The U.S. Marshals Service said Operation MISafeKid stressed on finding missing children who were victims of human trafficking.
The operation, which took place on September 23, located and recovered 123 of the 301 missing children that had been reported missing in the area.
All children were interviewed about potentially being used in a sex trafficking ring or sexually victimized during the time they were taken.
Authorities found three cases that were related to sex trafficking and one homeless boy who hadn’t eaten in many days. All children were turned over to Child Protective Services for aftercare.
The operation involved numerous law enforcement agencies, including Wayne County officers, Michigan State Police, and the U.S. Marshals Service’s Detroit Missing Child Recovery Unit.
All participating officers investigated the case files of missing children before the operation. They visited friend’s homes, schools, and last known addresses to find them.
According to the U.S. Marshals Services, they had been requested to assist on thirty missing child cases in the 2 weeks before the wide-scale operation.
Marshals were able to locate and recover 9 children before the sweep and another 7 during the operation. They also received information about one missing child in Minnesota and 2 missing children in Texas, which they’re still investigating.
The U.S. Marshals Service said Michigan State Police asked them for assistance with other 14 cases. “The Eastern District of Michigan is fully committed to assisting state and local agencies with locating and recovering missing children and the prevention of their falling victim to sex trafficking.
The Detroit Missing Child Recovery Unit is tasked with investigating and recovering missing children upon request by a law enforcement agency currently attempting to locate a missing child.”
“The message to the missing children and their families that we wish to convey is that we will never stop looking for you,” the U.S. Marshals Service added.
Thank you, officers, for doing your best in locating missing children!
