Nicole Louise Perkins, a British photographer launched a 12-day ‘Down With Disney’ campaign to celebrate and help raise awareness for Down Syndrome.
Nicole believes that every person is beautiful irrespective of their unique traits.
Perkins, who works full-time at a special needs secondary school in the UK set out to help others witness this reality through her lens.
She launched a 12-day ‘Down With Disney’ campaign to “celebrate and help raise awareness for Down syndrome.” In this magical photoshoot, Perkins captured children dressed as various characters from Disney movies, including The Lion King and The Little Mermaid.
In an attempt to combine her love for children and photography, she first came up with ‘Down with Beautiful’ in 2018, where she featured 32 different toddlers, children, teens, and young adults with Down syndrome.” The response has been incredible, and it was so much fun creating the images,” she told.
“I have met some amazing families in the process and I’m so glad to see the joy the images of their children have brought to so many people.”
Nicole is a kind-hearted photographer, and the purpose of this photoshoot is just to raise awareness regarding Down’s Syndrome. Although, the “Down with Disney” campaign was not without challenges.
“The greatest challenge was knowing when to stop. I could have gone on forever with these photoshoots but the props and everything are just so expensive.” Above all, the photographer is satisfied with what she is doing and intends to do in the future.
Nicole’s love for photography raised with her from her childhood. But her journey towards becoming a professional photographer was not that easy and according to her, “I’ve always loved photography, but I wasn’t sure I would be able to get a job straight away after college if I studied it, so I did childcare instead.”
Her love for children jumped when she was placed in a special needs school during her last placement at college.
Her advice to other photographers who might be too shy to show their work publicly or to do projects that go outside the box was simple: “I would say go for it.” Moreover, she also explains that it needs a lot of patience working with children, as getting perfect poses takes time.
Being a photographer, show off your work. People will either love it or they would not. Nothing matters more than being true to yourself.
