A child from Rhode Island got coronavirus after receiving an autograph from NBA star Rudy Gobert, who has tested positive for the deadly virus.
However, health officials claimed the cases are not linked.
To students, a pres-schooler and a second-grader from Westerly have tested positive for coronavirus. One of them got an autograph from the NBA player one week earlier.
It was in March 6 when Gobert sighed an autograph for the youngster when the Utah Jazz were playing against Boston Celtics.
But health officials said that there is no link between the two cases.
The arena said in a statement: “TD Garden and Boston Celtics have talked with health officials who assured us that based on the affected players’ health statuses, it is highly unlikely that anyone from the Celtics team came into contact with them while they were contagious.
“Furthermore, the risk is low for guests, players and associates who were at the Celtics game on Friday, March 6 and events thereafter.”
Westerly Police chief Shawn Lacey said to the Provincial Journal that schools will be closed after two students tested positive for coronavirus.
Staff and students at the Springbrook Elementary School are currently on a two-week quarantine.
Gobert previously joked about the NBA’s policy to keep members of the media at a safe distance from players amid coronavirus outbreak.
The NBA player touched recording equipment and all the microphones at the press table after interviews with the media.
But he issued an apology after Jazz teammate Donovan Mitchell caught the killer virus.
“I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of concern and support over the last 24 hours. I have gone through so many emotions since learning of my diagnosis … mostly fear, anxiety and embarrassment,” Gobert wrote.
“The first and most important thing is I would like to publicly apologize to the people that I may have endangered. At the time, I had no idea I was even infected. I was careless and make no excuse.
“I hope my story serves as a warning and causes everyone to take this seriously. I will do whatever I can to support using my experience as way to educate others and prevent the spread of this virus. I am under great care and will fully recover. Thank you again for all your support. I encourage everyone to take all of the steps to stay safe and healthy. Love.”
