Women who use permanent hair dye or chemical straighteners more frequently are more likely to get breast cancer.
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health – a branch of the US Department of Health – revealed that breast cancer risk is increased if you use chemical hair products frequently.
The researchers tracked almost 50,000 women over eight years and found that women who regularly use permanent hair dye are nine percent more likely to get the disease as compared to those who don’t.
While women who use chemical hair straighteners every five to eight weeks are 30 percent more likely to get the disease as compared to those who don’t.
The reason behind this is that chemicals get into the skin through the scalp. To avoid the risk of breast cancer, women must avoid using permanent hair dye or chemical straighteners.
According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 5,000 chemicals are used in hair dye products which are very harmful.
This recent study was published in the International Journal of Cancer that reveals that women who use permanent hair dye or chemical straighteners more frequently are more likely to get breast cancer.
Dr. Alexandra White, the corresponding author, said: “Researchers have been studying the possible link between hair dye and cancer for a long time, but results have been inconsistent. In our study, we see a higher breast cancer risk associated with hair dye use, and the effect is stronger in African American women, particularly those who are frequent users.”
However, Professor Paul Pharoah, cancer epidemiology at the University of Cambridge, said that there is no good evidence to prove that the hair dyes or chemical straighteners increase the risk of cancer.
Professor Pharoah also said that women “who have used such products in the past should not be concerned about their risks.”
