A 9-year-old took the witness stand and gave testimony about how former police officer Derek Chauvin refused to remove his knee from George Floyd’s neck.
Judea detailed how she and her cousin Darnella Frazier went to Cup Foods to buy some snacks on May 25 last year when they saw Floyd on the ground.
“He (Chauvin) still stayed on him (Floyd),” Judea recalled. She said that paramedics “had to put him off of him… They had some guys take him off of him.”
When gently asked by trial attorney Jerry Blackwell about how she felt as she witnessed the fatal arrest, Judea answered: “I was sad and kind of mad. If felt like he was stopping his breathing and kind of hurting him.”
“And tell us why were you sad and mad,” Blackwell said.
The 9-year-old girl replied: “Because it feels like he was stopping his breathing and it was kind of like hurting him.”
Judea’s cousin Darnella, who recorded the viral video of the incident last year, also took the stand and described how she felt helpless as she saw Floyd lose consciousness.
“There’s been nights I’ve stayed up apologizing to George Floyd for not doing more and not physically interacting, not saving his life,” she expressed.
“But it’s not what I should have done – it’s what he [Chauvin] should have done.”
On Monday, a third witness who described himself as an MMA fighter described how he saw Floyd slowly ‘fade away like a fish in a bag.’
“You see his eyes slowly pale out and he knew…he vocalized it, his eyes rolled to the back of his head, you saw the blood coming out of his nose, he said his stomach hurt and from then on he was lifeless. He didn’t speak,” he continued.
Williams said that what Chauvin did was a blood choke – a technique to cut off Floyd’s circulation.
