Derek Chauvin, the police officer that has instigated anti-racism protests around the globe by killing George Floyd, has been charged with 9 counts of tax evasion on top of his ongoing case over the murder of Floyd.
His-wife, Kellie May Chauvin, has also been charged together. Kellie filed for divorce on May 25th, only a day after Chauvin was arrested for the murder of Floyd. The divorce case is still ongoing, meaning that the two are still legally married.
Washington County officials have announced that the couple have not reported all of their incomes between 2014 and 2019. The prosecutor’s office estimates the underreported amount to be around $464,433 to be exact.
Included in this rather large sum is $95,000 that Chauvin reportedly earned by doing security work while he was off-duty. Having a second job while serving as an active force for the police does not violate any rules by itself.
The local prosecutor’s office said that the investigation for the Chauvins’ financial status was launched on June when they failed to file for their income taxes in time.
It was during this investigation that the prosecutors and revenue investigators found out that the two have been filing the wrong amount between 2014 and 2019. The prosecutor’s office said that the Chauvins used many of the tricks of tax evasion, which means that they likely knew what they were doing.
From not paying both federal and state income tax despite both of them working in Minnesota to not paying the full amount for a purchased vehicle, the prosecutors said that they have secured ample evidence to charge the two of them.
Lawyers say that each count is punishable by 5 years in prison or a fine of up to $10,000 according to federal and state laws. As aforementioned, the two have been charged with 9 counts of such crimes.
Local attorney’s emphasized that Chauvin’s involvement in the death of Floyd did not affect their investigation in one way or another. Pete Orput, Washington County attorney, said he simply wants to hold everyone accountable because no one can be above the law.
