The 45-year-old was found guilty of all counts, with the jury taking 10 hours of deliberation to reach their verdict.

Chauvin showed no emotion as he was taken to the cells in Hennepin County Government Center.

The former cop was later transferred to Oak Park Heights, the only Level 5 maximum-security prison in the state.

It has space for up to 473 prisoners and is regarded as one of the safest for high-risk inmates.

Only one person has been killed within the facility since it opened in 1982, and no offender has ever escaped.

Chauvin will be considered a suicide risk so he will be closely monitored to ensure his safety.

Bill Hutton, the Executive Director of the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association, told KARE 11 in February that wellbeing checks are one of the most important safeguards a prison can take to prevent inmate harm.

For prisoners who are mentally or physically sick, or considered a suicide risk, wellbeing checks should be done more frequently.

As a former cop, Chauvin will also be at risk from other prisoners.

In a 2004 book about Oak Park Heights, Jim Bruton, former warden of the prison, wrote that there was a hierarchy among prisoners according to the crime they committed.

At the top are inmates who have killed law enforcement officers while sex offenders are at the bottom.

Child abusers or molesters are considered the lowest of the low.

The three other cops involved in the fatal arrest – Thomas K. Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Alexander Kueng – will face trial in August.
