As protests over the death of George Floyd continues as racial tensions show no sign of easing, the accused officer’s wife filed for a name change, along with other requests such as rights and tittle’s to the couple’s various properties.
We have previously covered how Kellie Chauvin, the wife of former police officer Derek Chauvin, filed for divorce on the very day that Derek was imprisoned with a bail set at $500,000. It was also filed just one day before Derek was charged with murder and manslaughter over Floyd’s death.
The couple had been married for 10 years since June 2010. They had no children between them, although Kellie had two children from the previous marriage. The filing cites that the marriage and the bond between the two has been broken and can’t be reconciled.
It is understood that the reason she requested her last name to be changed is so that she could disconnect herself from her to-be-ex husband Derek Chauvin. Although she did not specify what she wanted to changer her name into, CNN reports that Kellie had previously used Thao and Xiong as last names.
It is also noteworthy that Kellie, in her petition to the court, requested full rights to the properties that are shared by the couple. The filing identifies two properties – one in Minnesota and another in Florida.
She also requested that she receives her equal share for the bank accounts and vehicles that are under the couple’s names. Kellie indicated that she will not need further financial support after the divorce since she will make her own living in the real estate business.
According to CNN, Kellie moved to the US with her family after they fled their home country of Laos in Southeast Asia. Other media reports say that her husband before Derek has passed away.
The Chauvins reportedly first met at a medical center where Kellie was working as a radiologist. Ironically, this very center was where Floyd was announced dead.
In 2018, she competed and won the Mrs. Minnesota competition. She characterized Derek as a rare gentleman who has a soft spot despite his tough appearances in uniform and said she wanted to advocate for Asian Americans should she win the pageant.
