Just hours after a police shooting took place in Chicago, protestors spilled out into the streets to condemn the use of violence.
Some of the protestors – which source such as the New York Post cite as being hundreds – turned to looting all across the city early Monday.
The ordeal began on Sunday afternoon, around 2:30pm. After receiving reports that there was a person carrying around an unconcealed weapon in Englewood, in the south side of the city, police officers were dispatched and identified such man near Moran Park.
Although the man first fled the scene, at one point he turned and fired at the police officers. The police returned the fire and injured the gunman. The culprit was then sent to the University of Chicago hospital. The conditions of the man has not been reported as of yet.
After the incident, some 30 protestors showed up in the streets and protested against the police. Officials said that a false report that the police shot and injured a child was circulated among the group.
The Chicago Tribune, which reported every aspect of the story, said that looters rushed down the Windy City’s Magnificent Mile. Reporters said that these vandals were seen carrying around big bags full of what seemed to be stolen goods.
Omega watch store was one of the shops that were targeted by the looters. One police officer who was dispatched to the scene told reporters that the protestors will sooner or later break into the luxury watch store.
Another batch of people were seen running out of PNC Bank, which was damaged during the looting. Other stores in its vicinity at Huron and State streets were also vandalized and looted.
At the end of the day, several individuals were arrested for their actions. At least one firearm was collected during the process, although it is not yet clear if the gun was legal.
There are reports of minor injuries and property damages on both sides. Some protestors were pepper sprayed, while at least two police officers were injured at the hands of protestors.
