Doris Cleife, a Portsmouth resident, recently received a surprise birthday party as she turned 25.
What’s unusual in that? It is the fact that she was born on 29th February 1920, which was 100 years back, but being a leap day born, she technically turned just 25.
Her family, friends and more than 30 residents from her assisted living apartment block celebrated her birthday like any other 25 years old and threw a surprise party for her with balloons and cake.
She was brought into tears seeing this and said that she’s grateful and didn’t ever think that she’s so popular.
Her family wanted to celebrate her birthday privately, but the residents also wanted to celebrate as she was the first one turning 100 among them, so they planned this surprise party on 28th February.
Doris’s husband Sam died in 1979. Since then she was living with her son in law and daughter in Portsmouth.
After her daughter died in May last year, she moved into her new home at Brunel Court, which is an assisted living complex from extra care provider Housing 21.
She is blessed with two grandchildren, Rachel and David, three great-grandchildren Kirsty, Sammy and Isla and two great-great-grandchildren Tilly and Thea.
Rachel, Doris’s granddaughter told how Doris loves playing with all the kids in the family, first her grandchildren, then her great-grandchildren and now her great-great-grandchildren.
She says that the kids keep her young at heart. She also told that Doris has been pulling their leg for months now saying she can’t wait until her 25th birthday.
Doris gives her long life’s credit to eating well, but it is probably her good genes as she also has a sister Edna who is 98 and also lives in a Housing 21 Extra Care scheme and hopefully would be celebrating her centenary soon.
