In a world that can be tough and cruel, we instinctively search for moments when our soul is uplifted and our faith in humanity is restored. That’s why we just love those stories about acts of kindness and compassion towards complete strangers because deep inside, we hope that other people we don’t know would treat us the same way if ever we were in trouble.
But in this age when self-glorification through social media is the norm, it’s easy to become cynical and wonder if those acts of kindness were just staged for the benefit of those coveted likes and shares. That’s why it’s a total breath of fresh air when we find instances of people who don’t know they’re being observed but still perform a good deed anyway.
Such was the case of a young woman who was caught on CCTV performing an act of kindness that has made her famous on Facebook.
The woman was later identified as Duygu Elma and she was seen leaving a Turkish cafe as she opened her umbrella in preparation of braving the rain. However, before she could go far, she came upon a black and white dog that was curled up and sleeping on the sidewalk.
After a few seconds of indecision as other people passed her by with barely a glance at the stray dog, Duygu decides to act. Unknown to Duygu, she was within sight of a CCTV that happened to be facing her direction.
The video shows her removing her scarf as she lays her umbrella on the pavement so that she could drape the fabric over the sleeping dog who wakes up briefly once it feels the scarf on its skin.
Duygu’s act of kindness was posted on Facebook where it quickly went viral with at least 330,000 views.
In an interview with The Dodo, Duygu explains that she wasn’t expecting any praise and that made her gesture even more beautiful.
“I couldn’t imagine that my actions would receive this attention. I’m very surprised about it. The weather was so cold. I just couldn’t take it when I saw him shivering,” she said.
Duygu’s story is a refreshing reminder that there are still people out there who are truly compassionate and not acting out just for public approval. And the world is certainly a brighter place because of it.
