If you think you’ve tried every ice cream flavor that may exist, you need to think again.
Ben and Jerry’s is planning to launch a CBD-infused ice cream, and they have told their customers that they are “doing this for our fans.”
But there is a small problem – the firm will have to wait until the use of CBD in foods and drinks becomes legalized in the US.
As of now, the United States’ Food and Drug Administration does not allow the usage of CBD (or cannabidiol) in eatables.
Ben and Jerry’s reportedly submitted a comment to the FDA in the recent public hearing organized by the regulator, 3News Las Vegas reported.
The FDA will make recommendations, on the basis of public comments it gets, to a federal group trying “to explore potential pathways for dietary supplements and/or conventional foods containing CBD to be lawfully marketed.”
Ben and Jerry’s revealed the big news on their website, writing: “You probably already know that we’re fans of all things groovy.
“So it’s no surprise that we can’t wait to get into the latest food trend: cannabidiol, or CBD. We are committed to bringing CBD-infused ice cream to your freezer as soon as it’s legalized at the federal level.”
“Currently, the FDA prohibits adding CBD to food and beverages,” the website said, citing a recent survey conducted by National Restaurant Association which found that 75 per cent chefs named CBD-infused foods to be the food trend in 2019.
“But change is on the horizon: They’ve set a public hearing on the legalization of CBD-infused foods and beverages for May 31st, and we’ve submitted a comment to them in support of legalization,” the message said.
The food company is currently searching for a sustainable CBD source from Vermont, according to The Guardian.
Ben and Jerry’s CEO Matthew McCarthy said: “We’re doing this for our fans. We’ve listened and brought them everything from Non-Dairy indulgences to on-the-go portions with our Pint Slices.
“We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we want to give them what they’re looking for in a fun, Ben and Jerry’s way.”
The company is also calling for people to help the cause by reaching out to the FDA – but it looks like people have already fallen for the upcoming product.
“I just read that Ben and Jerry’s is working on a CBD ice cream. Hell yes!” one person tweeted.
Another said: “@benandjerrys is making cbd ice cream. If ya’ll know me I absolutely do not eat ice cream but that’s an ice cream I’ll eat.”
One user wrote: “IS THIS REAL LIFE?! CBDICECREAM?????”
