Award-winning singer, actress, and songwriter Katy Perry probably doesn’t need the internet to look for a long-term partner.
But since the advancement of technology changes almost everything, internet dating became a new norm.
So when Spencer Morrill thought he had found the famous singer online, he grabbed the chance to introduce himself and stayed connected with her.
The two shared an instant bond and started a 6-year-long relationship where they talked to each other over emails and texts.
Even though Spencer never met Katy and only talked to her once on the phone, he decided to spend 25 percent of his savings to buy an engagement ring.
He told MTV:
“It was an immediate connection. A million ‘I love yous’ back and forth. It was pretty cool. I would like to meet face to face and see if there’s a future here.
She’s awesome. Katy’s funnier than I am, she’s smarter than I am. I don’t know how many people give her credit for that, but she’s very intelligent. Katy’s full of life, huge heart.”
It is true that nothing is impossible, but unfortunately for Spencer, everything was just a fiction. He had been a victim of one of the most eccentric catfish of all time.
The real Katy Perry had never head of Spencer before until the news broke out.
The truth was revealed when Spencer appeared on Catfish show, which exposes ‘catfish’ people who create fake personal identities on social media platforms to trick others into falling in love with them.
The show traced the fake Katy Perry and found her in Gloucester, England. Spencer still refused to believe that a woman named Harriet tricked her until the show’s presenter had a conversation with him.
The show’s presenter Nev said:
“We’ve found the person you’ve been talking to beyond really any shred of doubt, and you still want to believe the thing that makes you happier. You need to know that you’re not talking to Katy Perry.”
The TV show had Spencer confront the faux singer, who admitted what she did wasn’t right. She also apologized to him, and they parted on good terms.
During the pair’s meeting, Spencer said: “I’ll be okay. I’ll be fine. The bad’s in the past. What’s ahead will be good.”
