Loving Cat Gladly Accepted A Pup Who Was Left By Own Mom Into Her Family

A British shorthair cat from Brookfield, Connecticut, showed an extremely unlikely behavior by making an infant Chihuahua a part of her family.

The little fellow, named Lazarus, had quite a harsh week and the loving cat ended up saving its life.

“I didn’t think he was going to make it,” Sharon Eisen, the owner of the animals, told CTInsider. “This mother has really saved his life.”

Little Lazarus was born with a C-section and his mother could not develop a natural bond with him as she didn’t go through the normal procedure of giving birth.

She failed to develop affection or produce milk for Lazarus, thus leaving him totally on his own.

“We had a puppy with no mother and no milk,” said Eisen, a veterinarian by profession. Eisen tried several dog milk formulas but none of them worked for Lazarus.

Thinking on the matter in a totally new way and after consulting her colleagues, Eisen compared the ingredients of kitten and puppy milks and found out that they were about the same.

It was when Eisen took the infant pup to Jada, the cat.

Jada had just given birth to a litter and had lost one of her kittens. She open-heartedly accepted the new entry into her family and started cleaning Lazarus as cats typically clean their own kittens, indicating full acceptance into the family.

Since the first interaction, the whole cat family including the kittens has accepted Lazarus’ presence as a member of their family.

“I don’t think they know it’s another species,” Eisen said of their unique bond. “As they grow, it will be interesting to see how they interact.”

Having a rough start, including going days without a proper meal and being breathless at the start of his life, Lazarus has his name from the Biblical figure who was brought back to life after death.

“After all we’ve gone through to keep this puppy alive,” Eisen said. “I don’t know how we’ll be able to part with him.”
