A well-groomed cat was found wandering the streets with a note handwritten by a child attached to its collar.

When Effingham County Animal Shelter first came across Violet the cat, it was clear to them that her good looks proved she wasn’t on the street for a long time.

“She’s very, very sweet and loves to be scratched on the head,” rescuer Michaela Muzzy explained.

Besides the cat’s positive attitude and good looks, it was also clear that she had just recently been abandoned due to a letter attached to its collar.

“Bye Violet. I think that name chose you. I wish I could keep you. Bye Violet, I hope you get a good owner. To owner: Please take good care of her. By the way, I named her. Thank you! Love, Lacey,” the letter, which was clearly written by a child, read.

As Vanessa Skavlem of the Effingham County Animal Shelter revealed, the touching letter broke the workers’ hearts.

“When we pulled it off and read it it just tugs at your heartstrings. I just envision some child loving this thing, and knowing that they can’t keep it,” she said in an interview with The Dodo.

As the microchip scan came back negative, the rescuers knew there was no way of finding the owner of the cat and all they could do was hope for someone to adopt Violet as the child in the note pleaded.

After the abandoned cat’s story and the letter went viral, a local resident named Cindy Murray knew she had to act fast.

“You could tell it was written by a child. You could tell she loved this cat but she just wasn’t able to keep her anymore and she wants her to go to a good home,” Murray told The Dodo as she spoke about the touching letter.

“I screenshotted the post and sent it to my husband at work, and said, ‘I want to go get this cat. I love it — talk me out of it.’ And he said, ‘You know I can’t do that. If you want it, go get it.’”

And so she did. On the same day, Murray visited the shelter and brought Violet to her new home.

“She’s been purring and she seems very happy,” she added.

“I thought about doing a little video to this girl saying, ‘Dear Lacey, I adopted your beautiful Violet. She’s going to have a wonderful life — full of treats, snuggles and everything we can give her.’”
