A caregiver has been arrested after a shocking video showed him slapping an elderly man in the face and shouting ‘how stupid are you’ at him.
19-year-old John Delgado was arrested for physically abusing the frail 88-year-old man, who requires full-time care of basic needs.
Police from Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said the teen hit the elderly man in the head, stomach, and face multiple times.
The footage shared by HSCO starts with the caregiver pulling the victim off the bed and putting him in a wheelchair. He then slapped the elderly man hard on the face and told him to ‘relax.’
The teen then pulled the frail man to his feet before slapping him again. “You’re a f***ing idiot! Like how stupid are you?” he screamed.
Delgado then yanked the victim from the wheelchair, slapped him hard, and dragged him back to bed.
The caregiver was arrested hours after the horrifying incident occurred and charged with abuse of an elderly or disabled adult and battery.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said Delgado had broken the trust placed in him and called his actions ‘deplorable.’
“The actions of this man are deplorable, unacceptable, and disturbing,” he said. “Delgado was trusted to take care of this man and to protect him. He not only broke this trust but put this man in direct danger with his actions.”
One internet user commented: “I would have seriously damaged him, if I saw him abusing a patient; even if it was not my relative.”
Another wrote: “This punk should not be allowed near children either.”
A third added: “Why is a 19 year old a caregiver to the elderly? People that age can barely take care of themselves.”
