A car was caught on camera getting swallowed by the sea after a couple wanted to enjoy their view to the fullest by driving closer to the water.
The incident occurred at Brean Beach in Somerset, UK, where an unnamed couple’s car got stuck in the sand as they attempted to get a closer look at the water without leaving their vehicle.
Before the couple could free their car from the wet sand beneath, it was time for high tide and the water kept on rising until the entire vehicle was engulfed by the sea.
“A couple had taken their car on the beach and the driver wanted to get closer to the water,” the Burnham Coastguard Rescue Team wrote in a Facebook post following the incident.
“Just as his wife said to stop, the front wheels dug in as the soft sand gave way under the weight of the car, instantly trapping it as the tide advanced towards them.”
As the rescuers explained, the car wouldn’t budge and couldn’t be saved despite the help the couple received from other beachgoers.
“It would not budge and the water continued to rise quickly until the vehicle was completely engulfed and submerged beneath the murky waves,” they added.
“Our team were responding to ensure there was no risk to any persons and when we arrived only the roof was visible which soon disappeared too.
“After checking on the owners and ensuring everyone was safe and no one was in any need of medical attention, we liaised with our Coastguard Operations Centre and the car owners about recovery.”
According to the rescue team, “this kind of error stirs up a lot of anger locally.” As they explained, however, the couple paid dearly for their mistake.
“This couple have lost their car, their transport home, their personal belongings and countless bills plus however long they will be without a car and that’s without the emotional strain this brings,” the coastguard concluded.
