Car Keys Should Be Wrapped In Aluminum Foil, Police Warned

People who own relatively modern cars can easily unlock their vehicles from a distance.

This function means a driver should only be in the vicinity of the car for the central locking system to open the doors and turn the engine on.

But like other technologies, there are problems and pitfalls associated with the keyless function, things that thieves are doing their best to abuse.

With this feature, car thieves have been on the up but there are simple tricks that people should know when it comes to protecting their vehicles from predators.

The keyless function works thanks to a computer chip inside your key. It has a unique code synced with the security system of your car. Your vehicle has another chip with the same code and technology. When the codes match, it allows the car to open the doors.

Most keys require drivers to be within 30 centimeters of your car, making it hard for thieves to take the car before you reach it.

But when parking in public areas, thieves can amplify the radio signal from your key. This trick is an effective method of stealing vehicles and one that robbers continue to excel.

Car thieves have technology that can capture the signal from the car key and unlock the vehicle so they can take it.  Once the car has started, there is no need for the key anymore. As long as there is enough fuel in the tank, they can easily take the car away before you notice your car is missing.

Stolen cars are then re-encoded with new keys.

But this can be prevented by wrapping your key in aluminum foil as it creates a barrier that blocks radio waves and electric signals.

Police said that if the key is wrapped in foil, it can become more difficult for thieves to capture the signal and steal your car.
