Captain Tom Moore turns 100 and has been promoted by the Queen to Honorary Colonel to mark the Colonel’s 100th birthday as the World War II Captain has captured the hearts of everyone in the nation by collecting £29 million funds for the NHS by walking in his garden.
The promotion was offered to Captain Tom along with a personal note from the Queen and the Colonel has also been given his WW II War Defence Medal before the VE Day celebrations to be held next week.
Apart from the usual champagne and cake, there will be 2 flypasts for marking the Colonel’s 100th birthday.
As well-wishers all over the world sent loving cards, Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, paid tribute to the Colonel saying Tom embodies the spirit of the U.K.’s incredible community along with the nation’s resolve.
The Chief of General Staff, General Sir Mark Smith, made an appointment to make the WW II veteran the 1st Honorary Colonel Harrogate’s Army Foundation College that trains 16-,17-year-old soldiers.
Sir Mark noted that Colonel Tom would be the inspirational role model for old as well as young generations.
Giving his message to the U.K. as it fights with the coronavirus pandemic, Colonel Tom laid emphasis on the importance of unity.
Colonel Tom said that he sincerely believed that everyone as a nation should always stand united, together, and undivided by race, class, or religion, and added that the only way they could defeat their invisible enemy was to stand united and never walk alone.
Colonel Tom has received wishes and congratulations from Camilla and Prince Charles. Great Western Railway has also paid tribute to the honorary actions of Colonel Tom and announced that the train, Captain Tom Moore, would now be operating with a new name.
Chris Evans (Virgin Radio Presenter) has also sent a very special gift to the new Colonel, which is a 2012 Olympic torch and probably the only one that could still be lit. Amused Colonel Tom even attempted to blow it.
