Captain Marvel may finally be out in theaters with everyone eagerly awaiting Avengers: Endgame but there’s one crowd that’s feeling a bit dissatisfied: the SJWs themselves.
Which is a bit ironic considering that the lead up to Captain Marvel marketed the film as the pinnacle of feminist representation on film.
But apparently, Captain Marvel still isn’t woke enough for SJWs as they’re now pushing for Carol Danvers to be openly gay.
Comic book site CBR.com suggests that “revealing Captain Marvel as gay would be a winning move for Disney, and an important step forward for the MCU.”
They further argue that the MCU should implement “progressive storytelling” in more detail after Avengers: Endgame. The latter film will mark the end of the first generation of Marvel superhero films and provides the perfect backdrop to segue into more “progressive” themes. With the success of Black Panther and Captain Marvel, it’s apparently time to take it to the next level.
The CBR article argues: “The Brie Larson-helmed film has opened the door for the studio to make an even bigger statement by presenting the new face of the MCU as a straight-up LGBT character. Why can’t the strongest Avenger out there, the one who’s leading the new era of Marvel movies, be gay?”
“The general audience has embraced the hero’s progressive style and what she stands for, inspiring girls and women globally,” they continue. “By making her queer, the studio would jump to the forefront of gay rights everywhere. By presenting Carol Danvers as a feminist, a strong woman, and a hero with an unbreakable will who just so happens to be an LGBT representative would be a remarkable way to help shape the MCU’s future.”
Marvel Studios already diverged a lot from the comic book version of Carol Danvers who has a checkered love life with various characters like Wonder Man and even Wolverine. At one time, she even dated her mentor Mar-Vell (who was portrayed by Annette Bening in an apparent drive to make the movie as “female-led” as possible).
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president, said that they made Captain Marvel deliberately love-interest free to better emphasize the importance of her friendships and mentorships.
“Well that was something as we were developing the script and queuing off of the comics as always, it never even occurred to have a love interest,” Feige explained. “That’s not what the movie was about. It was about Carol finding herself and growing and making mistakes and being bolstered up by her female mentors and female friends.”
Introducing an LGBT plot line might have derailed the focus on Danvers’ more realistic human relationships or made her more interested in defeating the Patriarchy instead of the enemies of humanity. Even if a “progressive” story line would have scored more points with the SJW crowd, the long term effect on the larger fan base might not be so positive and Marvel Studios seems to be aware of that.
But with Disney and Sony now having merged, the studio has more access to a range of superheroes without having to shoehorn a straight character into an LGBT role. In fact, Marvel Studios is rumored to be toying with the idea of having an LGBT lead for the upcoming “The Eternals.”
