A young cancer survivor has captured the hearts of the audience and the judges with his touching performance on America’s Got Talent.
11-year-old Tyler Butler-Figueroa made an especially notable impression on Simon Cowell who hit the Golden Buzzer and showered the boy with confetti following his performance.
Little Tyler was only four years old when he was diagnosed with leukemia. Since then, his life was full of challenges including bullying which resulted from his hair loss caused by chemotherapy.
“When I lost my hair, I was really sad and embarrassed at the same time to go to school. They used to make fun of me and laugh at me because I was different,” the 11-year-old recalled in an interview with America’s Got Talent.
Fortunately, the young cancer patient discovered his passion for music at the age of 7. Much to his mum’s delight, the boy’s spirits went up after he started taking violin lessons.
“Once he started that class, it was like sunshine. He was just full of energy, happy,” the mother admitted.
But for Tyler, playing the violin is more than just a hobby. “When I play the violin, it helps me forget about all the bad stuff,” the boy said.
On the AGT stage, the 11-year-old stunned the judges as soon as he began playing a moving rendition of Stronger by Kelly Clarkson.
Following his performance, the AGT’s strictest judge, Simon Cowell, asked the boy how his actions made him feel to which the boy responded by saying: “I’m feeling really proud of myself.”
Comforting the young man, Simon explained that “most people are bullied because they’re better than the people who bully them.” He then hit the Golden Buzzer and joined Tyler on the stage together with the boy’s proud mom.
“I just didn’t want to be the kid with cancer so now I’m the kid who plays the violin,” the 11-year-old added.
