San Pasqual High School in Escondido released its 2018-2019 yearbook titled ‘The Golden Legend, on Monday and created a lot of fuss.
Teachers at the high school have sparked outrage as they appeared in yearbook photos wearing sombreros and sporting fake mustaches.
The images depict seven teachers from the World Language Department, six of them can be seen wearing sombreros, ponchos, and fake mustaches.
According to the statement from the Escondido Unified School District, the pictures were taken to use for teacher’s photo id.
The statement reads: ‘’The 2019 yearbook for San Pascual High School, “The Golden Legend,” was released yesterday to senior students. It has come to our attention it contained photos from the World Language Department that are culturally insensitive and in poor judgment. The photos are a collection of pictures taken at the beginning of the year for use as teacher ID photos.’’
‘’Administrators have discussed the issue with the SPHS staff. Principal Martin Casas and his administrative team are taking precautions to ensure a similar situation does not occur in the future.’’
According to principal Casas, “San Pasqual High School takes pride in its rich history and diversity. It is our intent to use the situation as a tool to remind students, as well as staff, to remember the impacts of their words and actions. We are committed to continuing our efforts to ensure all students, families and staff feel welcome and valued.”
“United … we are San Pasqual.”
Principal Martin Casas wrote in a separate statement: ‘’We owe an apology to our Latino and Chicano community, a community that I am part of,’’
‘’It is unacceptable and has no place in our school. I am saddened and disappointed that this happened, but we will use it as (an) opportunity to learn and grow together.’’
School district spokeswoman Karyl O’Brien said administrators have talked about the offensive photos with San Pasqual High School staff and assured the public that the principal and his subordinates ‘are taking precautions to ensure a similar situation does not occur in the future.’
Students and parents at the school have different opinions on this matter as some found it offensive while others didn’t.
One parent Tania Marin told NBC7, ‘’I think that lately everything is so sensitive,’’
‘’If they were teaching Russian and they had a Russian hat, I would find it hilarious.’’
C.J. Craig, a freshman at the school said, ‘’I thought it was racist,’’
‘I thought they were making fun.’’
‘’I loved the pictures. I don’t feel offended. Teachers are amazing. I’m thankful for everything they do for our children,’’ said Jazmin Brown.
