Gavin Newsom, California’s governor, made an announcement that the state will be extending a $125 million grant for undocumented immigrants who are affected by the coronavirus.
This plan makes California the first state to provide financial aids to illegal immigrants living in the USA. The state plans to give $500 individually to approximately 150,000 adults who were not a part of the $2.2 trillion stimulus package, which was sanctioned by Congress.
A lot of Americans have been receiving $1200 checks from the government, and people who are unemployed are getting an additional $600 in a week from the government as they are ordered to stay inside their homes.
Unfortunately, people who are illegally residing in the country are not eligible for the money offered by the federal government. Many advocates across the country have been making efforts to fill in the gap.
Democrat Newsom, on Wednesday, announced that he would invest $75 million from the taxpayer money to set up a Disaster Relief Fund for undocumented people living in the country.
Newsom said that the authorities are grateful to the people who are living the fear of deportation but still addressing the requirements of the existing situation.
He highlighted that 10 % of California’s workforce are immigrants and who paid over $ 2.5 billion in the form of local and state tax in 2019.
However, Shannon Grove, the Senate Republican Leader, said that the government should spend the money on food banks, educational equipment, and the government who is dealing with revenue loss.
He said that rather than catering to the urgent needs, Newsom had made an irresponsible decision of offering the unilaterally secured fund to the people who are living in this country illegally.
California has around 2.2 million undocumented people, which is more than any other state. The state officials will not be the ones distributing the money; instead, it will be handed over to a group of regional non-profits and let them find the potentials recipients.
However, advocates said that it would be challenging to make this plan work as a majority of these people would not come forwards due to the fear of being deported. Therefore, the authorities would have to use establishments that they trust to distribute the money.
There are other charities as well that are committed to raising at least $ 50 million for immigrants from private donors, and as of now, they have collected $6 million.
