Bonnie Kimball was terminated by Cafe Services. The district manager told her: “Do you understand what you did was wrong? That was theft.”

The school division of Café Services told PEOPLE in a statement that they had “a recent situation where an employee violated school and company policy in dealing with our food service and our district manager made a decision he felt was right at the time.”

After consulting with the school district regarding policies for handling student transactions, “we are going to offer to rehire our recently terminated employee and provide her back pay and we will work with the school district to revise policies and procedures regarding transactions.”

The company added: “We will then work with our manager on those policies.”

Kimball said she refused the offer from the food service company and school officials to get her job back at Mascoma Valley Regional High School.

“They’re not doing it for me, they are doing it to save face,” she told CNN.

In an interview with CNN, Kimball said she had known the student’s parents since they were young and knew they would pay it back, and they did.

“I quietly said, ‘Tell (your) mom you need money,’” Kimball told the Valley News.

The student paid the tab the next day but the manager fired Kimball, who worked for the company for 5 years. She had been following the supervisor’s rules to avoid causing “any scenes with the contract.”

Two of her former co-workers decided to resign in protest.
