The ‘I Feel Pretty’ star Busy Philipps has revealed that her 12-year-old child Birdie is gay and prefers the use of they and them pronouns.
As the American actress, who is best known for her roles in Freaks and Geeks, Dawson’s Creek, and Love, Inc., explained in her podcast, Birdie spilled their secret “at 10 years old.”
“I said: ‘You know Bird, I’ve been doing a bad job with the pronouns,’ because Birdie said that they would like their pronouns to be they/them,” the 41-year-old said.
“And I haven’t been doing it and I’ve said because like I have this public persona and I want Birdie to be in control of their own narrative and not have to answer to anybody outside of our friends and family if they don’t want to.
“And then Bird was like: ‘I don’t give a f***. You can talk about that I’m gay and out. You can talk about my pronouns. That would be cool with me. That’s great.’”
As the proud mother admitted, she’s trying to do her best to use Birdie’s preferred pronouns even though she sometimes makes a mistake.
During the podcast, Philipps also recalled the touching moment her child told her they don’t feel like they’re really living despite being alive.
“And I got really emotional, because I said: ‘Well, first off, welcome to being my daughter – But I wanna say this to you, because I wish somebody would have said this to me,'” the actress said earlier during the episode.
“‘Like, this is living. You can’t wait for it to start. You can’t think, when I move to LA and I get that TV show, that will be – then my life will start. You can’t think’ – that was what I thought, guys, that’s not what she’s thinking.”
She also revealed she urged Birdie to become whoever they want to be regardless of the norms surrounding us.
“You get to build your life however the f*** you want to, and it doesn’t have to look like anything you’ve ever seen or anything that’s ever been modeled for you, because maybe it doesn’t exist, and you get to choose what will make you feel fulfilled and happy,” Philipps advised her child.
